"Sense of Place" Gallery

My Photographs try to capture the "sense of place" of areas that I visit. Images reflect my view of landscapes on and off the beaten path, people who reside in these places, and man-made additions to these landscapes.

Unframed pigment prints (16" x 20") are $300.
Call or e-mail for pricing on other sizes.
Other images are also available. Books that include many of the images in the "Sense of Place Gallery" are available.
Inquiries invited by e-mail.

Alaska Images

The following photographs were taken in Prince William Sound, Alaska during the summer of 2005. We were on a small boat naturalist tour (38 people plus crew) that allowed us to explore many areas that were off limits to large cruise boats. We spent part of every day in kayaks, getting even closer to the abundant wildlife and balancing oars with cameras.

Terezin Concentration Camp

Terezin, also known as Theresienstadt, was an eighteenth century fort that was converted into a concentration camp by the Nazis to house Jewish people from Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Slovakia, and Hungary. During the war the Nazis used Terezin to make the International Red Cross and the world community believe that Terezin was a spa town, referring to Terezin as "the paradise ghetto.” In under four years, more than 140,000 men, women, and children were brought there. 33,000 died at Terezin, mostly of starvation, and the rest were transported to Nazi death camps elsewhere. 15,000 children lived in or passed through Terezin; approximately 100 survived.

Pigment Prints

My photographs are printed by David Adamson Editions in Washington , DC . High Resolution pigment prints are created by spraying micro drops of archival pigment dyes onto the surface of a coated paper at the rate of several million per second. A resolution of 1,800-1900 dpi results from this process which has a broader tonal range and saturation, and is more archival than other printing techniques. The printmaker creates proofs that I carefully review and makes changes to the digital image, which is then printed.
